Alex Warner from the University of Queensland

The University of Queensland’s School of Education is offering an eight-week mentoring program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pre-service teachers to gain on-the-job experience in a school community.

Jointly funded by the UQ Office for Learning and Teaching and MATSITI, the project links Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pre-service teachers with an experienced teacher mentor on a weekly basis.

Alec Warner is a current Bachelor of Education (Primary) student in the program and finds the mentoring immensely helpful as a pre-service teacher.

As well as providing me with a healthy perspective as to where my future is heading within the classroom, I’ve been able to gain, as well as provide, a whole lot of knowledge thanks to my fellow mentors, colleagues and students

I’ve used the knowledge acquired to build up a resource bank for university, which has helped a great deal – especially with my assignments.
